Hello and Welcome!

At Eugene Microgreens we are dedicated to providing the most nutrient-dense and highest quality microgreens to families in our community while making them affordable enough to be eaten in larger quantities. Microgreens pack a big punch in the nutrient department because they can contain up to 40 times the vitamins and minerals than their mature counterpart, so adding them to your regular diet is an easy way to improve your overall nutrition.

My name is Shannan Wood and I am the farmer here at Eugene Microgreens. In the last 30 years, I have struggled with a plethora of health issues from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to Fibromyalgia to Lyme Disease and migraine headaches. By 2011, my quality of life had dropped to an all-time low and I was losing hope of ever living a full and satisfying life. Then my daughter suggested I watch a documentary about healthy eating strategies and I was hooked on using food to help treat my health issues. Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” and I took that to heart and began my journey of growing my own food.

I spent the first few years learning to grow annual garden veggies like peas, broccoli, cabbage, and kale. I learned about feeding the soil, spacing plants, care and watering, harvesting and storing my crops, and tons more. I was so thrilled to be providing healthy food to my body and it made an ENORMOUS difference in my overall health and vitality.

Then in 2014, I was introduced to the Permaculture Food Forest way of growing and began to turn both my front and back yard into a food forest of my own. Permaculture allowed me to establish native plants that would come back every year and grow with little intervention from me in the areas of watering and weeding.

This was incredibly helpful because my health issues made it difficult for me to keep up with a large annual garden. Through the use of perennial plants, I have been able to greatly reduce the size of my annual garden and the work involved in its upkeep while increasing the amount of food I produce. Win-win right?!

By 2019 I was finally able to go back to work but had lost interest in my previous profession. My passion was growing food for better health. Period. I toyed with the idea of growing a Market Garden and selling my food at the local farmers market, but again, I faced the problem of a heavy workload. All those veggies are heavy and require a ton of physical labor!

Enter MICROGREENS! They are grown in large quantities under climate-controlled conditions, the trays they are grown in are lightweight and portable, there is no weeding or pruning required, and best of all, I grow most crops in just over a week from sowing to harvest. It doesn't get better than that!

So, in September of 2019, Eugene Microgreens was born with a mission to provide nutrient-dense food in large quantities to the people of my community at an affordable price.
